Sharon asks…

How would a college student get a car?

I’m a 20 year old college community student. PI have never taken out loans to pay for school(only grants) I have recently taken on a second job (seasonal but hopefully I get to stay on). I really really need a car especially with this job. Public transportation is a huge pain and in my opinion, extremely time consuming. and I find myself not being able to work as much bc of it. I make 80$ a week at my current job and 150-200$ every 2 weeks at my other job. Sadly I have no money saved. My question, is there a quick way to get a car? How would I get a loan from a bank? Would they let me without any money saved? I am a customer at a bank but it’s been pretty much pay check to paycheck. Also, I think I can take out around 5000$ a year for student loans. Should i use that instead? I know your gonna tell me to wait and save but it’s really really hard. And I can’t get any money from my parents either to help:
I am planning on saving with this new job as well for insurance gas additional costs
Ps. Are there student car loans?

How would I go about starting an online business?

I have started a facebook fashion page that has recently hit 40k likes in 6 months (very proud of that). I’ve had a few small businesses contact me about possibly promoting their page on my fb so they can get more likes & they’ve offered to pay me. I never though about that but it’s a very good idea & a quick way to make some extra money. But I don’t wanna do anything illegal so I was wondering how I would go about doing it legal before I accept any money and get in trouble, in terms of taxes etc.

BTW I’m only 22 so I don’t know anything about the business world. Perhaps I should takes some business classes at a local community college?
@KCD Ohh I am I’m in school I just finished undergraduate in May. But this is just something to do on the side in my spare time & I am serious about it. A little extra cash wouldn’t hurt ya know?

Nagesh answers:

Nevermind the vultures above.

The ideal thing would be to register for a business license (probably a sole proprietorship) and get a tax number for your business. That’s the tax part.

I’m not sure if you would violating facebooks ToS (terms of service), so you’ll have to check if you’re concerned. I wouldn’t see a problem with it as long as it was never done directly through facebook (except the actual promotion).

Business classes probably wouldn’t hurt, but it depends on if you’re serious about going into business. Otherwise I’d figure out what you want to do in life and study away.

What is the quickest way to improve on an 18k salary with a new skill? What course should I enrol for?

Be it anything from carpet fitting to psychology. There are so many random ways to make money. I’m located in Newcastle in Finance and I want to apply for better jobs this year if I can. Literal answers are most welcome so please ignore the shallow approach and include all avenues,

Nagesh answers:

If your only motive is to earn money, then the economy will dictate what jobs pay the most, but it is cyclic, for example Finance is a good place to be right now, but if you are earning 18k then clearly you aren’t qualified in any particular area, and in order to do that, the quickest would be Project management with a Prince 2 foundation course (which will cost) and you would have to spend some time getting experience. Longer term you could look at CIMA and other financial qualifications to become an accountant, but you are looking at 3 years + of study. Stepping away from finance, you can look at plastering/electrician, and set up freelance, but that comes with its own risks.

I think the problem you have here is you get money for having good experience, good soft skills, or you are been paid to do a job nobody wants to do, or a combination of all 3.

In my experience, chasing money as the only motivational factor is never a good idea, you have to find some enjoyment or else you will end up bored and wanting a career change even when you are on big money.

Anyway, I digress, in my opinion, get to college/uni and do courses in business relating to environmental management/carbon footprint etc, or, social media studies, or , social studies in relation to corporate social responsibility. They will become more prominent over the next 10-20 years. Failing that, go into IT, it’s now easier than its ever been and it still pays relatively well, try and find niche but growing products to gain expertise in, along with mainstream products like SAS (if you stay in finance) or .net (JAVA), HTML5 is the next big thing.

Hope it helps, too many variables to give you a solid answer, you need a careers advisor!
