Is the US dollar depreciation policy helping to pay down the 14.5 trillion USD national debt more quickly?

I’m looking for feedback on the current depreciation of the USD (depreciation as opposed to devaluation given that we are a free floating market currency traded against other world currencies).

My understanding is that the depreciation is occurring indirectly via inflation.

This is occurring primarily because:

The Fed is effectively printing more money via the printing press and was engaged in QE2 whereby they bought treasuries (IOU’s) in the open market and introduced more money supply into the system.

All the new currency in the system effectively depreciates the dollar against other world currencies such as Euro, Sterling and Yen, but not the RMB as the RMB is for all intensive purposes pegged to the dollar within a 5% fluctuation band.

The consequences of this action should result in US company export improvement as US goods become more competitive, and their overseas sales in Euro/Yen/Sterling are repatriated back to US. In short, people believe this will stimulate economy via an improvement in Aggregate demand and improve job growth rates etc…

But in terms of our 14.5 trillion USD national debt, is this currency depreciation policy actually improving our existing notional debt level?

Thinking about it:

1. US domestic inflation should make the real rate of return negative thereby reducing the FEDS interest payment obligation on treasuries. Although, I believe a lot of the treasury IOU’s have inflation adjustment mechanisms built into their rates now?

2. The QE2 policy of buying treasuries in the open market pays down existing debt more quickly.

Are we using higher value foreign currency to pay down debt at a quicker rate? Every foreign unit of currency now has more purchasing power against existing USD denominated debt?

I also realize that foreign holders of our debt aren’t exactly happy about the whole situation. For example, if the UK government had 100 billion of US treasuries it’s now approximately worth 60 billion sterling at expiration using today’s FX conversion rates instead of 75 billion last year. So in other words if the Fed retires this debt today there should be a benefit to paying it back using foreign currency?
On the other hand the Chinese as one of our largest creditors shouldn’t be that unhappy as their currency is literally pegged so I’m not convinced that the dollar depreciation policy is impacting them other than by adding to their existing inflation concerns…

Not familiar with all of the terminology used but I’ll give you my opinion on the subject.

In a broad sense, a depreciating dollar should make it easier for the US government to pay off its debt. By increasing the money supply we’re effectively decreasing the value of the debt. Let’s put this into a simple equation:

Let A=debt owed (in US dollars, constant), V=value of US debt (no units), M=money supply (in US dollars). We have:
A = VM
That is, the value of the debt and the money supply are inversely proportional to each other. The situation that is currently happening is that the money supply is increasing (Fed is printing more bills). Assuming that the debt amount is constant (not true but for a specified amount of debt this would be true and that’s what we want to look at) this leads to a decrease in the value of the debt, hence making the debt easier to pay off.

Another way to view this is that the US government could pay off the entire debt right now by simply printing $14.5 trillion. However such a drastic increase in the money supply would make the dollar worthless and would cause problems far worse than carrying around debt.

As for the Chinese they don’t want the dollar to depreciate since they have so much invested in dollar-backed securities (US treasuries). Assuming the Chinese want to be paid back eventually they’d want to be paid back with a higher valued currency rather than a lower valued one because that allows them to purchase more goods from countries other than the US with the same amount of dollars.

I have a question. What good is it to build a seven hundred mile wall on a twelve thousand fifty mile border? What does that mean for taxpayers? How can it possibly help put an end to immigration into the United States? Building the wall would be a huge waste of taxpayer’s time and money and it would create nationwide chaos.
One reason why the wall should not be built is because of the war. I know that you are probably thinking, “What does the war have to do with a solution to immigration?” You are right, however with the war going on, and the United States being so in debt, maybe now is not a good time to spend a few billion dollars on a giant seven hundred mile wall. I mean if we had the money, and there were people who enforced the laws on immigration the wall wouldn’t be such a bad idea.
There are always less expensive alternatives, such as putting many illegal immigrants into jail. If we started prosecuting immigrants and putting them into jail, then the other potential immigrants will see one of their “buddies” in a prison jump suit, they will quickly change their ways. If we prosecute the illegal immigrants then they will be so scared and will totally change their mind about the U.S. I think that you would have a better chance of jailing the immigrants than that wall to be a success.
The money spent on building the wall and the cost incurred to the exchequer could instead be invested in Mexico in setting up industries and plants which will create more jobs for the common Mexican. Creation of jobs will address the problem at its root cause and then the immigrants coming in search of jobs, could work at home in their own plant there. I think that this would be way more successful than having an extremely large wall separating to friendly countries.
Immigration to the United States keeps increasing; unfortunately the country is not increasing. The country needs immigration but too much from the same country can have its up and down sides. I just hope that if the wall is built, that it works- and very, very well!

I agree that the wall is a dumb idea; symbolic mostly; and say, in very high traffic places, it may be beficial.
Jailing immigrants is NOT the solution, because it would be much, MUCH more expensive than building the wall.
Your idea of investing in Mexico is interesting; except, of course, for the fact that that takes away from AMERICAN jobs and american economic progress.

Now before i say anything i know a lot of people hear the word ‘benefits’ and immediatly think everyone who has ever had to go on them is the same as the people on Jeremy kyle. I’m nothing like that. Nor am i a layabout. Moving on, I’m a 21 year old male who used to work a decent job before i found out the company was dodgy. I left and made my first mistake. I contacted the job centre and signed on. Before long i was on an extremely unhelpfull course for over 4 months which killed all my drive. I applied for as many jobs as i could over these months and took the position in the reception for experience. I became disheartened and fell into depression. After a while i saw my doctor and she said i was unfit to work. I was getting £47 a week then one day i had a letter to go for a medical. The examiner i went to see was foreign and i could hardly make him out. I dont think he could understand me either. I told him the 100% truth and i found out that he viewed me as being ‘fit for work’. I got the sheet of answers i had allegedly told him and he had jotted down completely false answers. I appealed and was told i won. I was also told that the government believe i only need £37 a week to survive. Thats all i’d get. I struggled for many months with this and then i found out that i infact had to appeal again. I lost that one and i cannot get anything. I am now effectively homeless as i cannot stay with my parents anymore and my mental state is quickly deteriorating. I’d love a job right now but i cannot survive after my last bit of money goes done let alone make it to interviews. What can i apply for? What can i do?

My sister is currently going through this. They seem to be cracking down on people on sickness benefits, in particularly people of your age. She had a foreign doctor too, and he wrote down false answers.
My sister has just had to take it higher and will continue to do so until she wins….she is totally unfit for work.

If you have a mental health drop in centre near you, go see them, they may be able to help. Also see the citizens advice bureau, they should be able to advise.

Also, on MySpace, some people make money by making accounts, adding a load of people, and selling them to others who are looking to advertise a product or themselves. On average, a 50k site can go for around $100. It gets boring just sitting around adding people, but it’s pretty good money considering.

Sounds tough if you cant get a job or run stands, however i think you should try asking family members if you can do chores for money around the house. Also if you have old clothes and things you don’t use or want anymore you can try selling them on eBay or if you have a Plato’s closet. If nothing works out just don’t spend any money on candy or whatever until you have 100.00. Hope things work out.

Well you should think think what your good at, art or cooking maybe?
If you know how to bake a cake then you make some and make a small stall, cookies is awesome. If youre good at art then you should try making small christmas trees cutting a branch from bigger and try decorating it with buttons and straws and sell them off in your neighbourhood. Or even thats lots of work in your busy schedule then buy Tang (powdered juice) make a stall and extinguish thirst for little money. Its helpful and profitable.
I used to buy beads of different colors and sizes and make friendship bands of different color combinations, girls love’em and you can profit a lot on that. I used to make bands and bracelets and give it to my little cousins and they feel happy wearing it.

I always had good luck with hot dogs. In fact very good luck. To put a hot dog together it only costs a dime. I would put up large posters “hot dogs 3 for a $1.00” trust me you will be selling them as fast as you can put them out. When no power was available I had a big pot on a propane gas stove, that works very well. 3 for $1.00 will bring you .70 on every sale. But don’t advertise your soda pop prices and make them a little higher, because most folks will want a drink with 3 hot dogs.also buy mustard in the gallon and have it off to the side, so they move away from the sometimes long lines. Hope this helps, and believe me its fun.

Yes there are money online. Most from blogging/creating website or providing service like writing, link building or graphic designs. However all those job won’t earn you a living this month unless you are really good at it

There are no legitimate opportunities online that can earn you any kind of sustainable income stream.

They are almost always scams.

At the most, with some survey sites, you can earn maybe $3 – $5 per month.

And don’t get suckered into “Data Entry” at home stuff – they are all scams.

In my experiances there are only two web sites worth checking out for money. Those are cashcrate, only the surveys, and amazon mechanical turk.

People on amazon mechanical turk post tasks that computers cant do for them, so they post to amazon for the workers to do the job for them and in return you get money. To make the most money, you want to do the ones that are 50 cents and over because the lower ones dont pay out well enough for the time you give. To find the web site just google amazon mechanical turk.

Cashcrate has lots of stuff on it but surveys are definitly the best route (other than referrals). 2 surveys at 80 cents pays out $45 a month. Usually it takes one or two five minute attempts before your accepted. It should only take 2 hours max to do two surveys but usually about an hour average.

Let me tell you what my 13 year old brother does. You know how girl scouts raise money by selling cookies they order from someone else? Well, my brother sells stuff for my friend. My friend pays him to sell custom-designed button pins for her (Like the kind that say “I love ___” and people can get whatever they want in the blank). He does it in school (like at lunch and on the bus) and on facebook, so it doesn’t take much time out of his day. Teenagers go nuts over these pins, and they are super easy to sell. He makes like $50 a week sometimes. My friend who hired him MIGHT consider hiring you via long distance (she’d ship the orders to you)… But you would need to email me and we could talk about it. There’s an email link on my profile. There might be people in your area who would pay you to sell stuff for them too. Ask around.

What should I buy and modify to resell to make a profit?

Hi. I’m a college students, recently got into trouble, and in about $3000 debt to a lawyer and future fines. I don’t have that money so I’m tutoring and going to school on weekdays and spending my weekends as an entertainer for children’s parties. I’m not making money fast enough and I’d like to try spending some money to make more money.

Im wondering if there is a market to buy something, modify it, and then resell it for a profit. I was thinking tie dye t shirts, or any kind of t shirts, or something. I’m hoping that someone could just throw suggestions my way or have any anecdotal advice on making profit on ebay. I understand there are many how-to guides but I’ve heard many of them are fake and not worth the money.

Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated as I’m willing to use up my last $115 bucks to profit from to buy back my freedom. If you have a suggestion that exceeds that amount, that’s fine, throw it my way anyway.

I’d suggest you hire yourself out ot homeowners since you have so little cash to work with. It takes money to buy inventory and then there’s the expense of adding enhancements plus your labor—it all adds up quickly.

There’s a home cleaning service most people never think of…and it involves doing the unpleasant jobs most home owners put off because they don’t want to face things. It came to mind the other day when I had my septic tank emptied. I noticed that within a moment or two of watching the work being done. The odor ceased to bother me. When I asked the fellow supervising the work how he could stand it, he said it’s a good living and that he doesn’t even notice the stench after awhile.

My idea:

Go house to house with two pails, a couple of sponges, some liquid detergent and a stack of of newspapers. You are the next great window washer that every home desperately needs! Newspaper makes washed windows sparkle, by the way.

There are other unpleasant jobs—surely you can think of some. How about offering to wash a hhome owner’scar right in their own driveway? Or offer to be a home owner’s special assistant for a day or part of a day? I’ve hired many people to do that, myself—it’s nice because there’s no strings attached—I give them work at $20/hr or whatever the agreed upon amount is and when the work is done, we say goodbye and that’s that.

I am a full-time struggling college student going on her 2nd year.I am employed, but I don’t make enough sometimes to pay my bills. My father helps me out when he can, and my mother is unemployed, so mostly I take care of myself. I am in desparate need for money right now, and I seem to have no other options. My rent is due and I am overdrafted in my account by $200. I tried looking for loans, but I never get approved. I also have 4 payday loans that I just can’t simply pay off. I know that payday loans are also not good to have, my father told me to never get one but I was desparate for money. Well, you can take it from my screen name that I have an opinion on this. Stop Spending! For real. I mean it.

Beer is a luxury item. You can’t afford it.
High-priced makeup is a luxury item. Do without or buy real cheap.
Walk. If not, hook up with someone for a ride or take the bus.
Really, it can be done.

Then, years later, when you are established and can afford stuff but only buy what you really need, you can give someone the same advice. If you don’t, you’ll live with this stress for the rest of your life.

For each hour in class, they supposively expect to devote 2 additional hours outside of class….What a joke!?

Don’t you think that’s a joke?
Okay let’s say they are taking 16 credit hours (typical full time)……so that would mean 32 hours outside the classroom………..for a total for 48 hours.

I for one have never devoted that much time to a class………..

& people tend to go away from home & in a dorm for college because involves “sex & partying, etc.”……..if they devoted that much time to their class……..they either wouldn’t have time to party or they would be too tired to party.

& most college students I know tell me they have part time jobs on the side………..like how do u expect me to believe that people devote 48 hours to academic and work on the side……….and also party on the side. No reasnonable person devotes 48 hours per week to school.

Now they supposively expect students to “read” the text book……..yeah, if you read the book, it will take you 48 hours per week……
Reading it would be much too time consuming and it is a poor way to memorize information………”skimming” the book, & relying on the lecture notes is a much faster way, not to mention a way that would make it far easier to memorize information.

Sometimes I don’t buy the book at all & only rely on the lecture notes….I’ve done well in some classes just by doing that. The book is a waste of money, way overpriced, and I don’t have the physical strength to carry it with me.

Either you are in a school that is challenging you, or you are in a school that is letting you slide by. They both cost about the same, but when you get to the end you have to take MCAT, GMAT or LSAT and that will give a bit of a measure of how much you actually learned.

The fact that a smart kid in a weak school can get by with very little work is a little depressing, but it is well known. That is why when you apply to grad school they look first to see what school you went to, and then look at your GPA. It is also the reason why graduates of say, UChicago – which is notorious for having students who spend their whole lives studying, get admissions preference to practically every program.

You can definitely get through school with less work, but you arent going to fool anyone about what you know. Employers and grad school admissions guys are not stupid.

I am looking for ideas from people who are self employed from home. I have a young son and I want to be able to stay at home and replace my current income. mijuju71—-I hardly think its appropriate to assume I am not skilled at my job, nor do I have training to get paid for the job I do. I am actually highly skilled and trained to do my job, one that most are unable or unwilling to do. Thus, the pay is higher because I do take the risk whereas others are unwilling to. Dont be fooled by thinking I am unskilled, I am probably more skilled than you if the truth be known. But, thanks for the insult none the less.

I won’t try to involve you in a pyramid or get rich quick scheme – just letting you know that I work for a medical coding company who hires “at home medical coders” who get great benefits, and make between $17.00 and $35.00 per hour depending on the type of coding that they do and their credentials. You’ll have to take a few classes (you can go to college or a trade school for these. There are also a lot of online classes available.) You would also need to become certified (start with your CPC – Certified Professional Coder), but if you go through an actual coding course, they should offer a certification program also. It’s great work; pretty interesting. I do ER coding – people go to the ER for all sorts of fun things. Every day is different, but it’s all right from the comfort of my own home. I can work in my pajamas….that’s nice 🙂

I’m not sure why you’re getting headshots now, if you’ve already got the auditions – it’s usually the other way round.
But to answer your question, make sure that the final photos really do look like you in real life.
If you send in headshots and then you turn up looking different, they’ll not be happy!
The backgrounds should be fairly plain – a stone wall, a plain curtain, a painted wall, anything which doesn’t draw the eye away from you. The shot itself should be from the shoulders up, with you in the centre.
A slight smile is best – don’t try to look sexy or pout – just normal. Keep hair natural but off your face. Make-up should be minimal – they’ll be looking for a blank canvas rather than any particular look. Any visible clothing should be light coloured, but not white, plain, not patterned, and not fussy – no frills or fancy collars.

I have a friend Sue that was in it for two years and made nothing (at least like all the promises she had). With that being said in any home based business the amount of work you put in varies from person to person.

She has a hard time because the business plan is mocked after Amway’s business plan. The way she explained it to me was you had to open three businesses, one main and two legs off it to really start making a little bit of money. (which she did) .. She invest over $1500 to start and then couldn’t ever find anyone good to sign under her .. MLM’s are hard so many out there … Also one person Sue signed (the only one that worked) did better then her so they ended up breaking away .. Which meant she was back to square one again.

Good luck to your wife .. She may know of people that can invest that kind of money and do well with it …
