What can you do to ensure a comfortable retirement?

My mother is retiring next year.

What can she do now, within the UK personal finance spectrum (savings schemes, tax credits, pension scheme tricks and tips, discount schemes for pensioners) that will mean she can enjoy a nice lump sum on retirement?

She worked for the NHS for a time, but now works in a private health care and I’m pretty sure she has a private pension scheme too. Does that change things?

On the personal finance level, I can’t advise you – but in terms of your mum thinking about her health in future years, she should definitely look at setting up some kind of arrangement with you / other kids/ trustworthy relatives whereby she can sign her house over to you (that is, if she is an owner-occupier).

You probably know that if your mum goes into care, she will have to use any savings above 18k to pay for her care – i.e. In effect she would need to sell her home to pay for it.

IN the long run it may well therefore make a lot of sense for her to ‘give’ the house to you – and she uses the money for herself over the years – I think legally you would need to charge has a small nominal rent.

This is all entirely legal. It means your mum could enjoy the capital in her home right now and in ‘nearer’ future years, and then if she does need to move into local authority or housing association sheltered accommodation or a care home, the state would have to pay, rather than your mum using her own money.

Something else your mum could look at is whether her existing home is in tip-top condition to prepare her for retirement – increasing age and fraility etc. Check out if you have a ‘Home Improvement Agency’ in your area. They specialise in helping over-60s and/ or disabled people stay living in their own home for as long as possible – i.e. They are entirely trustworthy and will do repairs, adaptations – sometimes for free, sometimes for a small fee.

Why is taxpayers money always wasted on silly things?

I have just read an article which cropped up when I went to check my emails. A girl named Josie Cunningham has had a £4,800 boob job on the NHS. She argued it was causing her “emotional distress” and that her new breasts will enhance her “glamour modelling career”. I thought the NHS was for people with medical problems etc? One of my Mums neighbours has terminal cancer; why cant there be money spent on helping someone like that rather than a silly little girl who wants big boobs?

A guy in my block of flats as well gets his rent paid and council tax paid for him. He is an alcoholic junkie and for months on end made everyones life a misery in the block by causing anti social behaviour. Everytime I went to lock up my front door, he would come down the stairs smashed off his face on Lambrini (would always carry ten empty bottles of it) and then he would start making nasty remarks to me. Every night was awful because he would shout and scream from 12am-6am. I’d have to get up early, that idiot would get to lounge around and sleep all day on taxpayers money.

In the UK, we have a Taxpayers Alliance. What is the purpose of it if money is still being wasted on people like this, or am I missing the point? Why can people not have a say on where they want their money to go? I know, this sounds like a ridiculous scheme, but a yearly vote e.g I want 50% of my tax to go on the army and helping soldiers in Afghanistan, 20% on the NHS, etc etc.

Does Labour really think that we can borrow our way out of our deficit?

Before the 2010 UK election , Labour said that deep cuts would have to be made in government spending , after the election .

After the election , they continued to say that deep cuts were necessary — but argued against every cut proposed by the Coalition government .

And now, for the past year they appear to have decided that any spending cuts are necessary at all .Instead , they have simply argued for a net reduction in taxation and an increase in borrowing , in order to pursue a dash for growth strategy .

Do they really think that we can simply borrow our way out of our deficit/debt — or is this just a cynical ploy to get elected?
Mac: Any fool can say something like — If we borrow £100 at 2% interest per annum ,over 20 years ,and invest that £100 so as to get a return of £8 per annum , then since the loan only costs us £5 per annum in capital repayments and £2 per annum in interest charges, then we will make a £1 profit every year .

That’s the problem with such “if” scenarios, they are meaningless as you can make them prove anything .
More trustworthy is the fact that experience has taught us that no government , particularly Labour governments, have ever managed to pull off that trick –if they could , we would be living in a tax free society .

In the run up to the election the Tories said they would cut the deficit in one parliament, Labour said they would do it over a longer period whilst investing in growth.
We actually came out of recession thanks to Labour, then the Tories came in and pulled the rug out from under the recovery by deep cuts and no investment in growth and the economy. At the rate the Tories are going, it will take 400yrs to clear our debt, proof that all they said and all they are doing is bollo/cks.
The Tories are borrowing billions over what they said they would, the problem is they aren’t doing anything with it to create growth and stimulate the economy. Borrowing is not necessarily a bad thing if it creates jobs and growth as the extra taxes from this along, with having less benefits to pay out, will offset the cost.
We can borrow at present at an historically low rate of 2%, so there’s no reason not to borrow now and start the infrastructure projects that we will need to start at some point in the future. I would suggest starting with a massive rental accommodation program. At the end of the day there are 2.5 million people unemployed. Many of these will get just as much in benefits if they were working, so they might as well be working.

Heres a scenario of how you can borrow money to get out of debt:

Let’s say you are in debt owing £300 and someone offers you a job of work for a month earning £500 a week and getting paid at the end of the month, the only problem is it’s miles away and you haven’t got the money for transport to get there. So you see a freind and ask if you can borrow £100 to cover your transport costs, he says he wants 2% interest on the money, you agree to this, work for a month, pick up £2000, pay your friend £102, pay off your original debt of £300 and you make £598. All done by borrowing money and investing in something that would make you a decent profit in the long term.

Labour have also promised to tax the bankers and spend the money on getting the million young unemployed into work with apprentiseships and such things. They have also promised to cut VAT which will also stimulate the economy as people will be able to buy more for their money. They have also promised tax breaks for firms that pay the living wage, although in my opinion they should just bring in the living wage without the tax breaks. It shouldn’t be up to the taxpayer to subsidise workers wages. The only businesses that should get tax breaks are small ones, not large corparations that make billions.

You need to look into how the country was transformed under Bevan with a house building scheme in the depression.
The basics at present are that we are paying millions of people benefits and could employ them at just the same cost, that means much of the labour for anything that is done will technically cost no more than it’s costing now, so basically free labour. We are going to need to build rental accommodation, so it makes sense to do it now. Once people have a home then they have to fill it with the usual things, everything from beds, cookers, fridges, tv’s to knives and forks, that would be a boost for the economy in itself.
Your attitude seems to be to let the Tories carrying on borrowing billions without seeing any real growth at all, that’s just insane. In case you haven’t noticed, austerity isn’t working, so something else needs to be tried, but that’s not going to happen under the stupid, arrogant chancellor that we have at present.
As for you saying what I wrote was stupid, I just gave you a scenario of how many can be made by borrowing, to show that there are times that borrowing can be good in the long term, it just depends what you borrow it for. But surely borrowing to build something at a time when interest is historically low and employment is high, is better than leaving it until the rates rise and we have low unemployment.

What a bloody joke she is, we should leave Africa to sort out it’s own affairs and we should also be very choosy about who we allow into Europe. We give money to Africa, and then we give some more, then even more, and nothing changes. Instead of giving money I think we should give them the idiots who come up with these hare brained schemes instead. We must look after our own people first, but politicians don’t want to do that and ignore us as we are just the ignorant fools that elected them in the first place. They arrogantly think that they know what’s best but they really don’t.

8 weeks – that is actually gambling, not investing. Look in the headlines, say at Toyota. If the news is bad, the stock will be driven down. Buy because it will be temporary. Hopefully there will be a plane crash in the next several days, so you can buy the stock.

Usually 2 cents per clicks.

The pay-off per click varies widely depending on what each advertiser decides to offer, based on the profitability of their products and their expected conversion rate (percentage of clicks that deliver a sale). Google is not saying what the average pay-off is, but our own experience after one month of running the program shows an average pay-off of $0.63 per click. We have seen clicks paying as little as $0.02 and as much as $3.00.

So, just for the sake of giving an example, lets say that your site receives 1,000 page views per day. If the 1.2% click-through rate and $0.63 pay-off per click that we have observed on our site hold true for your site as well, in a 30-day month you can expect to make:

1,000 x 30 x 1.2% x $0.63 = $226.80

Not enough to get rich, but a nice extra income nevertheless, that you can use to pay for your domain name and hosting costs, and then some.

You won’t save any money booking through Expedia or Priceline. Your honeymoon is very important. You don’t want it spoiled by a bad flight. Choose the airline that has the less demanding flight (preferably nonstop) from your home airport. Book the flight online from that airline’s website. It will be the same price as booking through a travel agency or a so called discount site. If you are not members of that airlines frequent flier club, join. You will earn bonus miles and flight miles on your trip. Book the best seats available and check your account daily to change your seats as better ones become available. Have a great time!

Can paypal legally hold my money?

I do not sell on ebay, and I had one dispute against me in the beginning of December and I provided paypal instantly of tracking info and info to show that the item was delivered and had been received. Once I did this, the person who filed the complaint never ever even responded again to the complaint, because they had been caught in a lie, and paypal ruled in my favor. Other than that, I have 100% feedback in my etsy store and have never had an issue with paypal.

Now fast forward to the end of December and I receive an email telling me that they plan on holding all payments received thus far from the email, for up to 21 days, yet when I called them on the phone about it in turned into 30-some days. My business is small. I design handmade items/clothing for kids and 50-60 percent of my sales go toward the cost of supplies since most orders are custom orders from customers. I need that money in order to be able to complete orders.

I called paypal, explained this, explained I’m an honest seller and a good seller and that I have never had an issue with paypal, except this one time which I proved I was right and they ruled in my favor, and that I need the money to complete orders…they basically gave me the run around and told me they do this every 60-some days to account holders, yadda yadda and they don’t care basically and I just need to find a way and deal with it…they said “incase of future orders, incase there would be a problem, they would need to have money to cover disputes and this is a security precaution they do on each account every 60-some days to every customer for a little over a month and if I have no cases or issues, they take the hold off once it is reviewed.” This makes no sense..what security do they really get from this and what happens after the 30 days to prevent this? I asked them these questions and they had no answers. I also asked many people in ym selling groups…some said they had and are experiencing the same thing and some who have had accounts for years and years have said they have never had this happen….I am confused…they said they do this to “everyone” as a standard practice every 60 some days!

I am just a small business, work from home, stay at home Mom who does this from extra income so what do I do when I need money for shipping and supplies and cannot afford the extra? Is this legally possible to do? I have done nothing wrong and do not see the point in being punished. It seems like they pick and choose who they wish to mess with and I do not find this fair. I could try another method of payment but all online transactions only have paypal as an option via etsy which is where my store is located and most people use paypal and feel comfortable with it so I feel it will hinder my sales. What do I do and how is this legal?
Also, I made the comment to them when I spoke to them that maybe I just wouldn’t use them for the days they review my account and that I would just find another method to accept payment and send invoices so I am able to process each order honestly and they told me if I do that and I do not hve paypal sales and transactions, it will not end the review, it will only make it last longer until they have something to review and I told them “So what, you want me to accept orders I cannot complete without having the money you have pending and on hold just so I can get a hold off the account when that goes against why you have the hold on in the first place…to make sure they have honest sellers. What sense does this make?

I’m not sure of all the details, but what I can tell you is that I am also an Etsy seller and I had a hold placed on my account in the past year as well. I was never able to determine the reason, since I had no disputes against me and have all positive feedback on eBay and Etsy. The only thing I could think was that I had had a few refunds processed through Etsy – one when a customer had not read the full description and then changed her mind (and went on to purchase something else in its place from my shop), and another when a customer twice purchased a reserved item that was custom made for someone else. I cancelled the sales through Etsy, following all of the proper procedure, and made the refunds through Paypal. I think my low business volume and proportionally high number of refunds (only 3 total) in a short time threw up a red flag. The only information I ever found was some vague explanation on Paypal saying that I shouldn’t assume I’d done anything wrong, just that sometimes they put these holds on accounts. Fortunately I didn’t need access to the funds to continue my business and eventually I got notice that the hold had been lifted. I was annoyed, though, since I didn’t do anything wrong. In fact, in all three cases the fault was on my customers. But I suppose Paypal has the right to do whatever they please within the terms of their user agreement. Good luck with getting the hold lifted, I know how frustrating it can be!

There is no buyer.

Notice how the scammer doesn’t call what you are selling by name? He uses the generic word “item”, that is because he sends the same stock copy/paste email to anyone selling everything that he can find and he has no idea what you are selling and doesn’t care.

There is only a scammer trying to steal your possession, your electronic item, clothing or jewelry.

The scammer isn’t interested in your identity or bank account only in convincing you to ship your possession to him without him sending you a penny.

The next email will be from another of the scammer’s fake names and free email addresses pretending to be “Paypal” saying “kindly send the tracking number and we will release the funds”.

Paypal does NOT send such emails, ever. Paypal does NOT have escrow or money holding services like that scammer describes. Paypal does NOT demand you send a tracking number before money is sent. EVER. No exceptions.

Now that you have responded to a scammer, you are on his ‘potential sucker’ list, he will try again to separate you from your cash. He will send you more emails from his other free email addresses using another of his fake names with all kinds of stories of being the perfect buyer, great jobs, lottery winnings, millions in the bank and desperate, lonely, sexy singles. He will sell your email address to all his scamming buddies who will also send you dozens of fake emails all with the exact same goal, you sending them your cash via Western Union or moneygram.

Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don’t bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn’t worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

If you google “cragislist buyer scam”, “fake paypal email scam”, “ebay escrow fraud” or something similar you will find hundreds of posts from victims and near victims of this type of scam.

Maybery setting up an account at care.com, you might find a babysitting job. I would suggest bringing a friend or family member the first time you go to make sure the people are not creeps.

The other thing is mowing lawns… I know cutting grass may come off as something boys should do, but there’s nothing wrong with a girl doing it. If your family owns a lawn mower, ask your neighbors if they would like their grass cut. Or could even ask if you could wash their car… & if you live up north, you could also ask them if you could shovel their snow. Or any other number hosehold chores that they might like done.

Recycle… Ask parents for a small allowance… Have a garage sale and split the profits w/ your parents… Sell your old stuf on e-bay/craigslist… Etc.

Also for birthdays/holidays, make sure people know you’d rather be given a few bucks in cash rather than some cheesy gift that you might not even care about.

This may sound dumb, but find change and fill up your piggy bank: last year my nephew saved over $100 through quarters, nickles, pennies & dimes.

Sell silly things roses for valentines day, or mistletoes for chrismas… And who said your too old for a lemonade stand? The list is endless, just use your imagination and start to ASK people! That might be the only way to get started… ASK… Don’t be afraid to ask, so right now, get up and go ask someone (the worst thing they could say is no).

Easiest way to clean my room and still have fun?

I have to clean my room if i still want to earn money, keep my laptop, etc. What is the Easiest, Quickest, and most like able way to do it?
I also do other stuff to have money. I am very good at cleaning the house. But i am crap at cleaning my room. So if i want to KEEP my stuff, I have to clean my room!

Turn up the radio!
Start with getting all the dirty clothes in the hamper, all the clean clothes hung up & go from there. De-clutter all you drawers & then make everything look pretty. I am a perfectionist when it comes to my room so I enjoy just making every detail perfect.

Make babysitting flyers using the computer and put them in the library, people’s mailboxes, and grocery stores.

Drum up more business and keep a notebook to schedule when you do get a customer.

I called many stores because I am 14 looking for a job. This was the response they gave which makes me happy after looking for so long.

Find a local one go online and apply and go in store to apply or call and ask if they are hiring.

What I did was Google a bunch of business near my home and found their numbers using Google maps or their sites and I called and directly asked if they are hiring and what age do they hire at.

Try local grocery stores, pizza parlors, retail stores, fast food restaurants.

So I was wondering how how can a 13 year old girl make money fast like in a month. I ride, and I REALLY want to show every weekend this year so I can do Devon…anyway.I need a horse to do so, buying one is out of the question so leasing will be only like 150$ a month.

You kind of said please no to everything within question for a 13 year old but i guess you could do what im going to try soon. I will make hemp bracelets and sell them for a dollar each. But last month i had a bake sale and sold cupcakes and cookies for a dollar each and made 120 dollars!

I don’t really have to speak the obvious, but due to the bad economy my family & I won’t be able to continue our “beach” tradition for Christmas this year. Not going to happen in cyberspace for you. You will only get ripped by sharks. When you mature you will realize you’ll only make money in the real world. Get a good degree in computer engineering or computer science, go to work for a good tech company and you can then make money ‘online’.

The sites don’t get paid directly from you, but when you complete an offer or survey, they also get paid a small portion of what you earned yourself. For example, if you complete a survey about computers let’s say, you would earn maybe $2 and the web site itself would recieve $0.50 from the company also for getting you to complete the survey.
