I have been in a similar position as your husband. I started playing online just for fun and fell in love with the game (or addicted if you ask my wife). After a couple of weeks, I had turned my starting 1,000 chips into more than 200,000, so I began wondering what if it had been real money. So I deposited $100 to try out, but busted very fast. Then I knew that I really didn’t know what I was doing. So I have decided that I won’t play anymore for real money until I feel that I am in control of the game. Poker is a game of skill as it is luck, so if you rely on mere luck you are going to be a loser in the long run.

My suggestion is that you encourage him to really learn the game and get tons (maybe years) of practice. If he is really serious about the game, you will see that he spends as much time reading and learning than playing. He could practice having play money sessions or freeroll tournaments. Freerolls are great experience, can be very enjoyable, and sometimes there are real money prizes, or get entry fees into bigger tournaments. If he gets to be very good (as well as lucky) he could earn some money to begin building a bankroll. It is not a good idea to spend money that you can’t afford to lose.

IMHO, this is a safer (though longer) road to success. If what worries you is that he wastes your money, this could be a solution. If the problem lies in that you require him to spend more time with you, it is another story. If you really would like him to follow a dream don’t disencourage him to get better. Who knows if someday we can see him become a successful professional. Michael Jordan was once cut from his high school basketball team… And he became the greatest player in history. Imagine if he wasn’t allowed to throw a basketball again in his life.

Anyway, keep paying attention to any behavioral patterns that may require professional help.

There’s no free quick easy money.

Most are scams. Consider the perspective of companies: why would they pay you to take surveys? What knowledge, information, or experience do you possess that brings them value? Probably very little. Most survey sites pay a few pennies per survey and you must earn at least $75 before they pay you anything. A person once claimed to be making $1000 per week, but doesn’t give the full story or is full of BS.

If there were a lot of free money out there, everybody would be doing this and eventually, a new survey website would go to the companies saying the can get responses for less money. Competition and market forces will quickly drive down the payment for people answering surveys.

There is NO free money to be found. Anyone telling you otherwise has a vested interest in convincing you otherwise.

Notice how nobody ever provides details, but just a link to another website. Can anyone give complete details about the surveys paying $6.00? Such as, what types of questions were asked, how many questions, and how long it took to answer the survey. What percentage of surveys is worth $6.00? All these sites look like e-mail harvesting sites rather than offering significant earnings (paying minimum wage or better to ALL participants).

If there are thousands of people willing to do surveys for a few dollars, then no company is going to pay “good money” for one to do so. Most of those things rely on your ability to get other people to waste their time filling out surveys once they register from your reference page

Anyway, Im going to assume you probably are below working age(usually about 16 depending where ya live). If thats the case you just need to look around you for opportunity. Its summer time so theres always jobs to be had. Lawn work, baby sitting, dog walking, etc. Ask around your neighborhood and put up flyers for babysitting or whatever trade you decide on at the local grocery store. If you are of legal working age then get a job at a fast food joint or something. Even at minimum wage you could make $500+ a month after taxes getting 25 hours a week and since you probably live with your parents and have little/no expenses that should suit you fine.

I’m in the same boat as you, so it’s really hard for me to give you great advice without sounding mundane and unhelpful. I’ve been in deep thought about making bank as well. I suppose you can do provide a service in your town/city and charge people for cleaning, babysitting, fixing items, etc. The fast food, marketing/sales, and retail industries are also looking for people to hire in this season. If you have a video/digital camera, you could record videos for money via YouTube Partnerships and other sites or earn money with photography.

You could also try to start a very small business, make that and your pockets grow, and hustle your way through if you have any ideas or entrepreneurial tactics. It’s all about budgeting, luck, connections, ambition, and creativity. Ask around for jobs and try to network to get what you want. For the most part, it’s all about “who you know”.

You can easily sell ads/commercials via AdSense or AdBrite with a Blogger or your own free website that supports it. If you are under 18, ask your parents to help you set up your AdSense/AdBrite accounts. If you have a specific skill or interest, you could also try to get by when applying your talents into what you like or are good at.

Nowadays we live in have a booming population with low amounts of money. It’s a tough economy and time for most people now. College education is expensive and does not guarantee you employment. If you plan on going, make sure you major in a field with more job opens like medical and engineering. 3,000 dollars is A LOT of cash, my friend. I currently have a full time job on minimum wage ($10). I work 7 hours a day, 5 days a week, labor. It would take me 3 months to earn that money (keep in mind, I’m broke). There is no way you could make that amount of money without a full time job, which you can’t get because of your age.

And as I said, 3,000 dollars is A LOT of money. It should be put to more important things than a trip to Costa Rica. Though that’s a fantastic adventure, it’s not really worth it. 3,000 dollars is money to be used for a first car or to start up your college fund, not take a vacation. You could mow lawns. Each of you could do 5 lawns every Saturday and Sunday. For each lawn you mow, you’ll get 10 dollars…

If you do that, you’ll get $100 EVERY WEEKEND.

$100 dollars every weekend for 6 months equals $2,400! You would have almost ALL of the money.

And If you live somewhere where it will start to snow in the winter, shovel driveways. Ten bucks a driveway. Same plan.

Keep in mind what I’m telling you to do isn’t easy work. You’re going to get sick of it. If it snows, you’re going to be cold and want to go inside and all that. DON’T. Stick through it. You’ll be glad you did. Not to mention you’ll REALLY impress your parents.

My advice to you is to make money the old-fashioned way, such as by doing odd jobs for friends and neighbours. Or, make something and sell it – learn woodworking, for example and build birdhouses. If you try to find online money-makers you are pretty well guaranteed a lot of misery.

There are a few legitimate data entry companies but are not hiring and have large waiting lists (1-2yrs). The majority of data entry jobs you seen online are scams. A real company will want you to have skills inc fast typing, may want you to know MS Excel, and will usually ask that you have high speed internet. Once in a long while you may found one online on a job website but thats rare.

If you do an advanced search on yahoo, you will find previous answers, sometimes the info on these is good as the info they gave is likely to have been verified if the answer was voted as ‘Best’.

Saving is definitely important, and you WON’T regret that in a few years when you want to go back to school or buy a home. You also won’t regret it when you’re able to retire debt-free at 55, tops.

However, you will regret it if that’s all you focus on. There’s a lot to be said for the present. Think about all those sayings: “Carpe Diem”, “There’s no time like the present”, “live like there’s no tomorrow, because there may not be one.” Etc. Etc.

The best thing you can do is compromise. For instance, at your age, you can leave the Roth IRA alone for now. Don’t get rid of it- and if you find yourself with some extra cash once in a while, by all means, throw it in there. Contribute the maximum that your company will match into your 401(k). And save a pre-determined amount each month or each paycheck for shorter-term goals. You say you’ve got 5 or so years. If you save 100 bucks out of each paycheck assuming you get paid every two weeks, then you’d have 26k just in principle- forgetting whatever interest you earn on it.

Use the rest, after living expenses, to enjoy life. My husband and I live a very good life. We’re currently living in a not-so-nice house so that we can save for our dream house, but still have money to travel and party with. Both of us contribute fully to our retirement plans, and we save about $3,000 per month on top of that. It can be done. It can be hard to budget at first, but once you get it right, you won’t regret putting the time in.

As you’ve not managed that, your second option (unless you have a British fiancé willing and able to sponsor you for a spouse visa) is to get a work visa, then after 5 years in the UK apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain, and then after 12 months apply for citizenship.

Getting a work visa is incredibly difficult – they’re only available for the jobs on the UKBA shortage list, and only the potential employer can get you one.

With WYSIWYG editors, you don’t need to know HTML.
